Description
Red Pouch Jaboticaba is likely a Plinia phitrantha bears fruit at just 4-7 years of age from seed, minor costate ribs on the fruit and the large lanceolate leaves. The fruit is globose on the apex side. The other side of the fruit has a teardrop shapped point where the fruit connects to the penduncle creating a “pouch” shape
Red Pouch Jaboticaba is likely a Plinia phitrantha or atleast phitrantha is the dominant ancestor in the case of a hybrid. Indicators of phitrantha genes include the 1-4 large seeds, short juvenile period bearing fruit at just 4-7 years of age from seed, minor costate ribs on the fruit and the large lanceolate leaves. The flat dark green leaves have an impressed primary nerve with minor secondary pinnate veins, a dull sheen, and a very minor crease along the primary vein which can also have a slightly wrinkled appearance near the primary vein. The fruit is globose on the apex side. The other side of the fruit has a teardrop shapped point where the fruit connects to the penduncle creating a “pouch” shape which is the cultvar’s defining characteristic and origin of its name.
